Pre-assembled fence panels — vinyl, aluminum, wood, or composite — speed up installation by a factor of 2-3× compared to stick-built fencing. The trade-off is rigid sizing: panels come in fixed widths (typically 6 ft or 8 ft), and post spacing is locked to those widths.

This calculator counts panels and posts based on the panel width you specify. Use it before ordering to verify the panel count against the fence length, especially for vinyl systems where partial panels are not possible.

How to Estimate Fence Panels

6 ft or 8 ft wide panels · posts at exact panel width on-center · cap on each post.

Panels = ⌈Fence Length ÷ Panel Width⌉. Posts = Panel Count + 1 + (2 × Gate Count). Caps = Post Count.

Panel Width Comparison

  • 6 ft panels: easier two-person handling, more posts/holes/concrete required, 33% more concrete cost vs 8 ft.
  • 8 ft panels: fewer posts, faster install, but panels weigh 30% more and require 2-3 people to maneuver.
  • 10 ft panels: rare; mainly commercial vinyl. Heavy and prone to bowing. Requires steel inserts in the bottom rail.
  • Custom widths: some vinyl manufacturers offer 5 ft, 7 ft, and stair-stepped panels for slopes — at a 25-50% premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

How many panels do I need for a 100 ft fence?

100 ft ÷ 8 ft panels = 12.5, round up to 13 panels of 8 ft width. Or 100 ÷ 6 = 16.7 → 17 panels of 6 ft width. Add 1 extra panel as field-stock backup.

02

Are vinyl fence panels and wood fence panels the same width?

Most are 6 ft or 8 ft wide. Vinyl panels are pre-assembled with specific widths locked by the manufacturer; wood panels are typically built on-site to 6 ft or 8 ft to match standard 4×4 post stock.

03

How are pre-assembled fence panels attached to posts?

Vinyl panels lock into routed grooves cut into the posts. Wood panels attach to posts via fence brackets or rails screwed/nailed to the post faces. Aluminum panels typically clip into manufacturer-specific post hardware.

04

Do panels need to match post spacing exactly?

Yes — post spacing is locked by panel width. Vinyl post spacing must be exact (within 1/4 inch) for panels to lock; wood and aluminum panels have ~1 inch of adjustment. Always set posts using panel width as the spacing template.

05

How many posts for 10 panels?

10 panels + 1 closing end post = 11 posts. Add 2 extra posts at every gate (gates need their own posts independent of fence panels).
