Converting paver size to coverage is a one-line conversion: 144 (square inches per square foot) ÷ (length × width of one paver in inches) = pavers needed per square foot of patio. Memorize this and you can estimate any paver job in seconds.
This calculator returns pavers per square foot for any size you enter, plus total project count for any area. The reference table below covers the 10 most common sizes.
How to Calculate Paver Square Footage
Pavers per sq ft = 144 ÷ (L × W in inches). Total = Area (sq ft) × Pavers per sq ft × (1 + waste %).
Pavers Per Square Foot Quick Lookup
- 4 × 8 (brick paver): 144 ÷ 32 = 4.5
- 6 × 6: 144 ÷ 36 = 4.0
- 6 × 9 (Holland): 144 ÷ 54 = 2.67
- 8 × 8: 144 ÷ 64 = 2.25
- 8 × 16: 144 ÷ 128 = 1.125
- 12 × 12: 144 ÷ 144 = 1.0
- 12 × 24: 144 ÷ 288 = 0.5
- 16 × 16 (large format): 144 ÷ 256 = 0.56
- 16 × 24: 144 ÷ 384 = 0.375
- 24 × 24: 144 ÷ 576 = 0.25
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pavers per square foot for 6x6 pavers?
6×6 inch pavers cover 36 sq in each = 0.25 sq ft. So 1 sq ft ÷ 0.25 = 4 pavers per square foot.
How many 6x9 Holland pavers per square foot?
Holland pavers (6×9 inch) cover 54 sq in = 0.375 sq ft. So 1 ÷ 0.375 = 2.67 pavers per square foot — the most common residential paver size.
Why is paver coverage not just face area?
It is — the math is simply 144 ÷ (length × width in inches). Mortar joints don't apply to pavers (unlike brick walls), so face area equals coverage.
How do I count pavers for a project with multiple sizes?
Calculate each size's coverage separately, then multiply by the area it covers. For a mixed pattern (e.g., 60% Holland + 40% squares), multiply the total area by each percentage and apply that size's per-sq-ft rate.
How much waste should I add to the paver square footage?
10% for rectangular patios; 15% for curves and angled cuts; 20% for herringbone or basketweave patterns due to extensive perimeter cuts.
