Editorial Standards

Each calculator is reviewed for formula accuracy, unit consistency, and alignment with current U.S. building practices before publication. We verify outputs against published engineering references and real-world project data. Learn more about our methodology.

A complete fence material take-off requires summing ten-plus separate items: posts, rails, pickets, fasteners, concrete, caps, gates, hardware, and more. Forgetting one line item is the #1 cause of mid-project supply runs. This calculator returns a consolidated take-off list.

For material-specific calculations (wood, vinyl, chain link, picket counts, post spacing), see the focused calculators in the Fencing cluster.

How to Estimate Fence Materials

Posts · rails · pickets/panels · fasteners · concrete · caps · gates and hardware — all required for a complete take-off.

Fence Material Take-Off List

 • Posts: ⌈Length ÷ Spacing⌉ + 1 + 2 per gate.
 • Rails: 2 per panel section (6 ft fence); 3 per section (8 ft fence).
 • Pickets/Panels: per linear foot × layout factor (2.18 for butted 5-1/2 inch pickets).
 • Fasteners: 3-4 screws per picket × picket count; 16d nails for rail-to-post connections.
 • Concrete: 1-2 bags 80 lb per line post; 3-4 bags per corner/gate post.
 • Post caps: 1 per post (cosmetic + protects end grain).
 • Gate hardware: 1 kit per gate (2 hinges + latch).
 • Concrete bags vs ready-mix: 20+ posts → consider short-load ready-mix delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What materials do I need to build a fence?

Posts, rails, pickets/panels, fasteners (screws or nails), concrete for post holes, post caps, hinges and latches for gates, and edge product if needed. This calculator returns counts for each.

02

How much does fencing material cost per foot?

Wood: $12-25 per LF materials. Vinyl: $25-40. Aluminum: $35-65. Chain link: $8-15. Composite: $30-50. Add labor at $15-40 per LF for a professional install.

03

What gauge fasteners for a wood fence?

Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless: 8d (2-1/2 inch) ring-shank for picket-to-rail. 16d (3-1/2 inch) for rail-to-post. Don't use bright steel — it rusts and stains adjacent wood within 1-2 seasons.

04

Do I need a contractor or can I DIY a fence?

Straight-run perimeter fences under 150 LF on flat ground are well within DIY reach. Above 150 LF, on slopes, or with multiple gates, hiring a contractor saves significant time and avoids permitting mistakes.

05

How much concrete per fence post?

1-2 bags of 80 lb fast-set per typical 4×4 post. 3-4 bags per 6×6 corner/gate post. See the{' '}Fence Post Concrete Calculator{' '}for exact counts.
