Horizontal fence is the modern aesthetic answer to traditional vertical-picket fencing — boards run sideways between posts, creating a contemporary minimalist look. The trade-off is more labor (each board must be aligned at consistent intervals) and more strict post-spacing requirements to prevent board bowing.
This calculator counts horizontal boards, posts, and backers for any modern fence design. For traditional vertical pickets, use the parent Fence Calculator.
How to Estimate a Horizontal Fence
Boards per LF = Fence Height (in) ÷ (Board Width + Gap). Total Boards = Boards per LF × Length × (1 + waste %). Posts = ⌈Length ÷ Spacing⌉ + 1.
Horizontal Fence Material Reference
- 6 ft tall × 1×6 butted: 14 boards per 6-ft panel section.
- 6 ft tall × 1×6 with 1/4″ gap: 12 boards per panel (semi-private aesthetic).
- 6 ft tall × 1×8 butted: 11 boards per panel.
- Posts: 4×4 minimum; 6×6 preferred for 8 ft post spacing.
- Backers: 1×4 or 2×2 vertical, every 4-6 ft. Mandatory for boards over 6 ft long.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a horizontal fence different from a traditional one?
Pickets/boards run horizontally between posts rather than vertically. The aesthetic is modern/minimalist; structurally, the load path runs differently — boards span between posts instead of dropping from rails to ground.
How far apart can posts be on a horizontal fence?
6 ft is the practical maximum for 1×6 horizontal boards (without bowing). Stronger material (1×8 cedar or 2×6 board) tolerates 8 ft spans. Closer post spacing (5-6 ft) is preferred to avoid sagging.
How many boards in a 6 ft tall horizontal fence?
With 1×6 boards (5-1/2 inch actual width) butted: 72 inches ÷ 5.5 = 13.1 boards, round up to 14 per panel. Spaced layouts (1/4 inch gap) use fewer boards.
Do horizontal boards need backers?
Yes — install a vertical 1×4 or 2×2 stiffener every 4-6 ft along the fence length, attached to the back of the boards. This prevents cup-warping and bowing over time, especially in sun-exposed installations.
Are horizontal fences more expensive?
Material cost is similar to vertical, but labor is 20-30% higher because each board must be precisely aligned at consistent intervals. Total cost premium runs 15-25% versus an equivalent vertical privacy fence.
